Gongai deeyan ramjan

ਂਗੂੰਗੇ ਦੀਅਾਂ ਰਮਜਾਂ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਸਮਝੇ

Gongai (dumb) deeyan ramjan (hints) gongai (dumb’s) dee (of) maa (mother) samjhai (understand).

Only a mother can understand her children, how they feel (even if they are dumb and can not speak).

Raah piya jannai


ਰਾਹ ਿਪਆ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂ ਵਾਹ ਿਪਆ ਜਾਣੇ

Raah (path, road) piya (on the way) jannai (know/experience) ja (or) vaah (do business) jannai (to know)

You will know the path by actually travelling on the path, similarly you will know a person when you have experienced 'business' (giving and taking) with him.

Kuree munda


ਕੁੜੀ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ , ਕੀਂ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ

Kuree (girl) munda (boy) raazee (willing or agreed) kee (what) karaiga
(will do) kazee (islamic judge).

The kazee marries couples, and can refuse the marriage. The meaning here is if two people agree on something (here, to marry), a third person has little influence.

Lah dittee

ਲਾਹ ਿਦੱਤੀ ਲੋੲੀ ਤਾਂ ਕੀਂ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਕੋੲੀ

Lah dittee (take off) loee (a thin blanket, here it means modesty) kee (what) karaiga (will do) koee (some one else).

If a person looses his modesty then no one can restore his dignity.

ਬਕਰੀ  ਜਾਨੋਂ ਗੲੀ , ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਸੁਵਾਦ ਨਾ ਪਾਿੲਅਾ
Bakri (female goat) jannu gayee (lost her life) khann valai (eater of
her meat) swaad na paaiee (did not find that meat dish tasty).

If a person tries too hard to please, the result is no one
is pleased.

Agai pichai


ਅੱਗੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ  ਗੋਲੀ ਅਾ ਬੈਠੀ ਮਾਮੋਲੀ

Agai (in front) pichai (behind) gollee (maid servant), aa bhaithee (came and sat) momoulee (the Pied Wagtail, a bird possessing very attractive eyes).

Meaning a person who does no house work or chores (in this case lets the maid servant  do it), but when all is finished he/she comes and enjoys, chatters and flatters with her eyes; as if to hint that the work has been done by her!

ਬੀਬੀ ਬੱਸੀ ਵਣ ਚੜੀ ਤਾਂ ਿਪਪੱਲ ਲੱਥੀ

Bibi (when a girl is addressed bibi) Bassee (just a name)
van (forest, jungle area) charee (climed up, gone towards), Peepal
(name of a tree) lathee (climb down)

Some people wander here and there, in this case from the forest to other types of trees in other location. Speaks of people wander aimlessly, go from one friend to another, and waste time.

Jitthe dekha


ਿਜੱਥੇ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤਵਾ ਪਰਾਤ ਉਥੇ ਗਾਵਾਂ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ

Jitthe (where) dekhan (see) tawa (round iron plate to prepare
roti) prath (large dish for kneading the flour, “kneading pan”)
othe (there) gaavan (sing) saree (full) raat (night).

Where things/benefit (in this case food) can be obtained people will spend time (her sing all night). A nod to the inherit selfishness in some people.

Nawaai nawaai mitt


ਨਵੇਂ ਨਵੇਂ ਮਿੱਤ, ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਕਿਹਦੇ ਿਚਤ

Nawaai nawaai (new new) mitt (friends) puraanai (old) kihadai (whose)
chit (mind, spirit).

As new friends are made, old friends are kept out of mind.

Maya (money or riches) therai (yours) tinn (three) naam (names)
Persoo, Persa, Persram (one person but he is called by three different
names).


Being rich results in being respected. If poor others will use an abbreviated/informal name (such as Persoo), with more money comes a more formal name (Persa) and with more the full name (Persram), and then follows Persramji!

Khotha oosereai


ਕੋਠਾ ਉਸਰਿਆ ਤਰਖਾਣ ਿਬਸਰਆ

Khotha (house) oosereai (built) tarkhan (carpenter) biserriaa (forgotten).

When a house has been built people tend to forget people who built the house. In other words, people are forgotten when not needed, and courted when they are. Refers to a time in Punjab when skilled craftsmen were in short supply.

Nere da saak


ਨੇੜੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਕ ਿਸਰਾਣੇ ਦੀ ਬਾਂਹ

Nere (close by) da (of) saak (relations) sirhanai (pillow) laiee (for) banh (arm).

When your relations (kith or kin) live near you, you can get their help whenever you need it, as you can rest your head on your arm (as if a pillow).

Maareh (financially poor in this instance) Jatt (farmer) kataurra (big bowl) labha (found) paanee (water)
pee pee (drank) aapharria (swelled out).

A poor person found a bowl, he was so happy he kept on drinking water until he felt sick.

When a poor person gets riches or fame suddenly, he he may not be able to handle it well resulting in harmful consequences.
